This was the heaviest GTA 6 news week since the Extended Look aired in August, and almost all of it came from one place: a magazine. Game Informer Issue 382 went digital on September 29, and the 14-page cover story inside it settled arguments that had been running for close to three years. Map size. Weather. Wildlife. Police behaviour. All of it on the record, with named Rockstar developers attached.
Here is everything that actually changed between September 26 and October 2, and what is still exactly where it was.
The headline: Issue 382 published
Game Informer Issue 382 landed digitally on September 29, carrying a 14-page cover story by Marcus Stewart, 12 new exclusive screenshots and original Rockstar cover art of Jason and Lucia. Secondary coverage followed across Vice, ComicBook, Pure Xbox, RockstarINTEL, GTA BOOM and Insider Gaming through September 30.
Three Rockstar developers were named in the coverage, which is unusual for a studio this guarded. Aaron Garbut, co-studio head at Rockstar North, gave the map figure. Michael Kane, reported as VP of dynamic art, gave the wildlife numbers. Owen Shepherd, reported as a VP, described the weather. We broke down who those last two are in our profile of the newly named Rockstar leads.
Map size is now an official number
Garbut's line is the one that will get quoted for the next decade: Leonida is "about twice the size of GTA 5's map," and Rockstar's biggest to date.
That is smaller than the community consensus. The widely repeated 2.4x to 2.7x figure was fan triangulation from trailer footage, never a Rockstar number, and it is now a confirmed overestimate. Garbut's framing pushed density instead of acreage: "denser, more detailed, and more interactive, with a lot more interiors," with the team obsessing over "the rooftops, the alleys, the interiors and everything in between."
No square mileage was given. No land-versus-water split, no per-region breakdown. The six regions are unchanged: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. Full detail in the official map size story.
Hurricanes are confirmed, and weather is no longer global
The single biggest system reveal. Tropical storms and hurricanes strike Leonida. Shepherd described storm states as "heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics, and a lot of rain," with water running visibly off rooftops and heavy lightning.
More structurally important: weather is now localised and persistent. GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 both ran a single global weather state. Leonida can be sunny in one region while it rains in another, simultaneously, driven by a dynamic cloud system. Puddles and wet surfaces stay after rain stops. Rainbows are in. The wind system was rebuilt and moves hair, debris, water ripples and swamp grass.
Still unconfirmed: whether hurricanes are scripted story events, whether wet roads change vehicle handling, and whether any seasonal cycle or in-game forecast exists.
170-plus animal species and a tracking log
Kane put the count at over 170 species, including 60-plus bird types and 30-plus land mammals. Named so far: alligators, manatees, flamingos, pelicans, iguanas, cane toads, armadillos, rhesus macaques, plus sharks, whales, rays, turtles and jellyfish. Fur can appear wet, dirty, matted or clumped.
A three-tier tracking system is confirmed: Rare, Discoverable and Legendary. What those tiers actually do is not explained anywhere.
This is where the week's worst takes came from. Hunting, fishing, skinning, crafting and cooking all remain unconfirmed. Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped a comparable species count with a full hunting economy attached, and people are importing that assumption wholesale. See how GTA 6's wildlife actually compares to RDR2.
Heat, car theft and the side-activity list
A new Heat layer sits on top of the returning six-star wanted system. Police build an identification from your appearance and the crime-scene location, which makes changing clothes and swapping vehicles a legitimate evasion tactic rather than a cosmetic choice. Heat does not replace the six-star system.
Car theft got firmer: high-end vehicles need specialised tools, expensive cars carry trackers and security systems, and the WAiNK app scans a target for security tier, resale value and registration cost before you commit.
The confirmed side-activity list is now: base jumping, billiards, gyms, kayaking, mini golf, scuba diving, street racing, off-road racing, zoo visits, air boating and jet skiing. Hiking appears as a date activity. Base jumping is the new entry, and it confirms parachutes by implication. Skydiving from aircraft is still not confirmed, and wingsuits have never existed in any GTA.
The 12 screenshots
Coverage described 10 of the 12 frames in detail. Highlights: a seaplane over the islands in a thunderstorm, a crop duster spraying an orchard, hikers under a waterfall, Vice City from the air at dusk, a night wetland dock with alligators below, and a store robbery with Jason holding a baseball bat.
One frame has caused more trouble than the rest combined: Jason on an ATV in a creek with a sniper rifle while deer drink nearby. That is three assets in one staged composition, not a hunting system. Our frame-by-frame breakdown covers what each image can and cannot be used to argue.
Elsewhere: the price argument restarted
Away from Rockstar, Warhorse Studios co-founder Martin Klima told PC Gamer on October 1 that he hopes GTA 6 will "blaze the trail" toward higher game prices industry-wide. It is the clearest sign yet that other studios are watching the $79.99 tag as a pricing precedent rather than a one-off.
What did not change
Release date November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Preload November 12. Price $79.99 / $99.99. No PC announcement. No GTA Online detail in any form. No launch trailer announced. No going-gold confirmation. 30fps baseline with no 60fps performance mode announced. No Collector's Edition news.
Issue 382 was a Game Informer feature, not a Rockstar Newswire post, and it carried none of the above. That is the historical pattern for Rockstar cover stories and it held perfectly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How big is the GTA 6 map officially?
About twice the size of GTA 5's map, per Aaron Garbut. Rockstar has not given a square mileage figure, and the older 2.4x to 2.7x community estimate is now known to be too high.
Are hurricanes confirmed in GTA 6?
Yes. Tropical storms and hurricanes strike Leonida. Whether any hurricane functions as a scripted story event has not been confirmed.
Does the 170-species count mean hunting is in GTA 6?
No. The species count and a three-tier tracking log are confirmed. Hunting, fishing, skinning and crafting are not.
Did Game Informer 382 reveal anything about the PC version or GTA Online?
No. Neither was mentioned. Rockstar cover stories historically never carry platform, multiplayer or performance announcements.
The Bottom Line
Issue 382 was a depth reveal, not a surprise reveal. Nothing about the release, the platforms or the price moved, and nothing was announced that was not already implied by the Extended Look. What changed is that a lot of guesses became facts, and one popular guess (the map being closer to 2.5x GTA 5) turned out to be wrong in the direction nobody expected. With 48 days to launch, the gap between what Rockstar has said and what fans have decided it meant is now the main thing worth watching.
