Almost every technical claim made about GTA 6 traces back to one thing: the engine underneath it. Rockstar does not licence Unreal or Unity. It has built and rebuilt its own technology for twenty years, and the reason GTA 6 can promise a map 2.4 to 2.7 times the size of GTA 5's with 700 or more enterable interiors is that the engine was designed for exactly that problem and almost nothing else.
Here is what RAGE actually is, what it has historically been good and bad at, and which GTA 6 claims it makes credible.
What RAGE Means
RAGE stands for Rockstar Advanced Game Engine. It was developed at Rockstar San Diego and first shipped in Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis in 2006, which is one of the odder debuts in engine history: a small game made largely to prove out the technology.
It has since powered GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3, GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2, and now GTA 6. Rockstar does not publicly version the engine, so figures like "RAGE 9" that circulate in community discussion are fan naming conventions, not official designations. Treat them as shorthand rather than fact.
Crucially, RAGE is not one monolithic thing. It is a collection of systems that were separately built or licensed and then integrated:
- Rendering and streaming, Rockstar's own
- Bullet physics, an open-source library Rockstar has heavily modified
- Euphoria, a procedural animation middleware from NaturalMotion, which Take-Two once had an ownership stake in
- RAGE Script (RAGE Technology Group tooling) for mission logic
- Networking, the layer that has carried GTA Online for over a decade
The Thing RAGE Is Actually Best At
If you take one idea from this article, take this: RAGE's defining strength is world streaming.
Streaming is the process of loading and unloading world data continuously as the player moves, so that a map far larger than available memory feels seamless. There is no loading screen when you drive from one end of Los Santos to the other because the engine is constantly discarding what is behind you and fetching what is ahead, at multiple levels of detail, while also running physics, AI and audio.
This is unglamorous, and it is the whole ballgame. Plenty of engines render prettier individual frames. Very few can hold a coherent, populated, physically simulated city in motion at that scale without seams. That is why Rockstar has never switched to a third-party engine: nobody else's is built around this particular constraint.
For GTA 6, the streaming budget is the number that matters. A map roughly two and a half times GTA 5's, with 700 or more interiors that you can walk into, means far more unique data per square mile, not just more square miles. Euphoria: Why Rockstar Bodies Move Like That
Euphoria is the reason a pedestrian you clip with a car in a Rockstar game stumbles, reaches for the hood, and catches themselves, rather than playing a canned "hit by car" animation.
It is a procedural animation system: instead of storing motion, it simulates a nervous system and a musculoskeletal model in real time, so the character reacts to forces as they arrive. It shipped in GTA IV in 2008 and immediately made every other game's ragdolls look like laundry. RDR2 refined it substantially, blending procedural reaction with authored animation so that characters no longer flop into uncanny poses at rest.
Rockstar has confirmed GTA 6 features prone crawling, zip ties and human shields, all of which are contact-heavy interactions between two character models. That is Euphoria territory. Take-Two also holds a family of animation patents describing things like reaching for door handles, gear shift interaction, and continuing an animation when another car crashes into yours mid-entry. Those filings are real and public, but they do not name GTA 6, and Take-Two also publishes NBA 2K and WWE 2K. Do not treat them as a feature list.
What Is Confirmed on the Rendering Side
Rockstar has stated GTA 6 uses:
- Ray-traced global illumination
- Ray-traced reflections
- Strand-based hair physics
- Dynamic clothing simulation
- Growing facial hair
- Very long draw distances
Ray-traced global illumination is the significant one. It means indirect light, the light that bounces off a wall and tints everything near it, is computed rather than baked in advance. For a game built on neon, sunset and water, that changes the entire look. It is also why a Vice City night can be lit by signage rather than by invisible fill lights placed by an artist.
Strand-based hair and dynamic cloth are expensive per-character costs, which tells you something about Rockstar's priorities: they are spending frame budget on how people look up close, not just on vistas. That fits the character detail technology Rockstar has emphasised elsewhere.
What RAGE Has Historically Been Weak At
Balance matters, so: RAGE has real, documented limitations.
Vertical and interior density has traditionally been sparse. GTA 5 famously had very few enterable buildings relative to its size. The 700-plus interior figure is Rockstar explicitly attacking its own weakest historical result.
Destruction has always been conservative. Rockstar worlds deform in scripted, limited ways; buildings do not come down. Nothing about GTA 6 suggests that has changed, and we went deeper on this in damage and destruction physics.
PC scalability arrives late. RAGE PC ports are historically excellent when they land, and they land a year or more after console. No PC version of GTA 6 has been announced.
Modding friction. RAGE has never had official mod tools, and the community scene exists in a tolerated grey zone rather than a supported one.

Is GTA 6 using a brand new engine?
No, and also not exactly the old one. RAGE is continuously rewritten between projects rather than replaced. GTA 6 uses a substantially evolved RAGE, but Rockstar has not announced a version number or given the technology a new name.
