Jet skiing is one of the activities Rockstar has explicitly confirmed for GTA 6, and of all the confirmed side content it may be the one best matched to the setting. Leonida is a state defined by water: ocean on multiple sides, the Keys archipelago, the Grassrivers wetlands, canals cutting through Vice City itself. A small, fast, shallow-draft watercraft is not a novelty here. It is arguably the most appropriate vehicle in the game.

Here is what is actually established, and what is not.

What Rockstar has confirmed

The confirmed water content for GTA 6 is a specific and limited list: swimming, diving, scuba diving, jet skiing, air boating, kayaking, canoes and boats. Jet skiing appeared in Rockstar's own list of side activities alongside base jumping, billiards, gyms, mini golf, street racing, off-road racing and zoo visits.

What has not been confirmed, and should not be assumed:

That last gap is the interesting one, and we will come back to it.

The series history, briefly

Personal watercraft have been in GTA since the PS2 era, and they have always occupied the same design slot: the cheapest, most available way onto the water.

The through-line is accessibility. Boats in GTA have always been slightly awkward to acquire: they live at marinas, they are slow to get moving, and they are hard to bring inland. A jet ski is the opposite, which is why it has survived four generations of the series without ever being a headline feature.

Why Leonida changes the maths

Three confirmed facts about GTA 6 make jet skis more significant than they have been before.

The map is roughly 2.4 to 2.7 times GTA 5's, and a great deal of it is water. Rockstar has published no land-versus-water split, so resist any specific figure. But the six confirmed regions include the Leonida Keys and Grassrivers, and the Issue 382 screenshots showed wetland docks, tropical island chains and a cruise ship port. A state shaped like this rewards shallow-water traversal in a way Los Santos never did. Our Leonida Keys region guide covers the archipelago in detail.

Weather is now localised and persistent. This is confirmed, and it is the first time in a Rockstar open world that it rains in one region while the sun is out in another. Combined with the confirmed rebuilt wind system that ripples water surfaces, the conditions you ride in become variable in a way they never were. Whether that affects handling or is purely visual is explicitly not confirmed. Our localised weather breakdown has the full detail.

Tropical storms and hurricanes are confirmed to strike Leonida. Heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics and heavy rain, in the developers' description. Whether you can take a jet ski out in that, and what happens if you do, is unknown and would be a genuinely new piece of GTA design.

The traversal question

Here is the practical angle nobody has answered. In GTA 5, water was mostly a border. In Leonida, on the confirmed geography, water is a route.

A Keys-to-Vice City run, a crossing between islands, a push up a Grassrivers channel into the wetlands: these are journeys a jet ski is better suited to than a car, not just a change of pace. And the confirmed Heat system, where police build identification from your appearance and the crime-scene location, makes a water exit tactically interesting for the first time. Changing vehicles is a confirmed evasion tactic. Changing from a car to a jet ski is a bigger change than changing cars.

That is reasoning from confirmed systems, not reporting. Rockstar has described no marine police unit, no water pursuit behaviour and no jurisdictional rules. Our wanted system explainer covers what has actually been said about police response.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are jet skis confirmed in GTA 6?

Yes. Jet skiing appears in Rockstar's confirmed list of side activities, alongside air boating, kayaking, scuba diving and boating. No specific model or manufacturer has been named.

Will the Seashark return?

Unknown. The Seashark is a GTA 5 and GTA Online nameplate and Rockstar has named no GTA 6 vehicle of any kind. A return is a reasonable expectation, not a confirmation.

Can you race jet skis in GTA 6?

Not confirmed. Street racing and off-road racing are confirmed activities. No water racing has been described.

Do hurricanes affect water travel?

Hurricanes and tropical storms are confirmed, and the wind system is confirmed to ripple water surfaces. Whether sea state affects watercraft handling has not been stated. Treat any claim about rough-water physics as speculation.

The Bottom Line

Jet skis are confirmed, and in a state built out of ocean, keys, canals and wetlands they are the vehicle class with the most obvious room to grow. The confirmed pieces around them are genuinely promising: a vastly larger and wetter map, localised weather, a rebuilt wind system, hurricanes, and a Heat mechanic that rewards switching vehicles. What is missing is every detail about how they actually play. Rockstar has given us the activity and none of the mechanics, which is roughly where it has left most of GTA 6's systems with 46 days to go.
