GTA 6 wildlife just went from a vague promise to a hard number. Michael Kane, described in coverage of Game Informer Issue 382 as Rockstar's VP of dynamic art, put the count at over 170 animal species across land, air and sea. More interestingly, the feature describes a tracking system that sorts animals into Rare, Discoverable and Legendary tiers, which turns wildlife from decoration into something closer to a collection.
The confirmed numbers
| Category | Confirmed |
|---|---|
| Total species | 170-plus |
| Bird types | 60-plus |
| Land mammals | 30-plus |
| Fish and reptiles | Included, no count given |
| Tracking tiers | Rare, Discoverable, Legendary |
The bird figure is the eyebrow-raiser. Sixty-plus bird types is more than most games ship in total animals, and it tells you something specific about the design priority. Birds are the animals you see constantly in a coastal setting and almost never interact with, which means Rockstar spent that budget purely on ambience and authenticity.
Species named outright
The feature names these directly:
Land and air: alligators, flamingos, pelicans, iguanas, cane toads, armadillos, rhesus macaques
Water: manatees, sharks, whales, rays, turtles, jellyfish
Several of those are deliberate. Rhesus macaques and cane toads are not native Florida wildlife, they are established invasive populations, and both are locally famous. Florida genuinely has a free-ranging rhesus macaque colony descended from animals released decades ago, and cane toads are a well-known suburban hazard. Including them is a research flex, not a rounding error. Our piece on that ecological layer is invasive species in Leonida.
Iguanas deserve a mention too. Florida's iguana population is notorious for going torpid during genuine cold snaps and falling out of trees, an event that makes local news every few winters. Whether GTA 6 does anything with that is unknown, but the species being in the game at all alongside a confirmed weather overhaul is an interesting coincidence.
The tracking system is the real news
Rare, Discoverable and Legendary is not the language of set dressing. It is the language of a completion system. Red Dead Redemption 2 ran a compendium that filled in as you studied and skinned animals, with Legendary animals as distinct, named, one-off encounters. The tier naming here suggests a comparable structure.
What Rockstar has not said, and this matters:
- Whether tracking is tied to a mission, a collectible list or 100 percent completion
- Whether there is any hunting, fishing or skinning mechanic
- Whether Legendary animals are scripted encounters or rare spawns
- Whether photographing an animal counts as discovering it
- Whether there are rewards beyond the log itself
Fishing in particular has been assumed for months because the map is drowning in water. It has never been confirmed. The only confirmed water content remains swimming, diving, SCUBA, jet skis, fanboats, canoes and boats. More in swimming and diving.
Where the animals live
The six-region structure maps onto real Florida ecology neatly, which is presumably the point:
- Mount Kalaga National Park: the land mammal and bird showcase. Higher elevation, forest, the obvious home for the 30-plus mammals. See Mount Kalaga.
- Grassrivers: wetland. Alligators, wading birds, the swamp grass that the new wind system bends. See Grassrivers.
- Leonida Keys: shallow clear water, reef species, the natural place for rays and turtles.
- Open ocean: sharks and whales. Our reference on Florida's three distinct water bodies is in marine life and reefs.
- Vice City: feral cats, pelicans on the pilings, iguanas in the parks, macaques where they should not be.
- Port Gellhorn and Ambrosia: industrial and rural, which in Florida means armadillos, buzzards and whatever lives around a drainage canal.
How this compares
Raw species counts across games are slippery because nobody defines a species the same way, but for scale: Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped around 200 animal species and built an entire survival and crafting economy on top of them. GTA 5 had a handful, mostly cosmetic, with a few used for the Peyote hallucination collectibles.
170-plus is therefore much closer to RDR2 than to GTA 5, which is a signal about how seriously the ecosystem is being treated. The difference is that RDR2's animals fed systems: hunting, cooking, crafting, trapper upgrades. GTA 6's animals currently feed a tracking log and nothing else that has been announced. Whether that changes is the open question.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many animals are in GTA 6?
Over 170 species, per Rockstar via Game Informer Issue 382, including 60-plus bird types and 30-plus land mammals, plus fish, reptiles and marine life.
Can you hunt animals in GTA 6?
No hunting mechanic has been confirmed. Rockstar has described a tracking system with Rare, Discoverable and Legendary tiers but has not announced hunting, fishing or skinning.
Are there sharks in GTA 6?
Yes. Sharks are confirmed, along with whales, rays, turtles, jellyfish and manatees.
What are Legendary animals in GTA 6?
The term appears as one of three tracking tiers alongside Rare and Discoverable. Rockstar has not explained what qualifies an animal as Legendary or what finding one does.
The Bottom Line
Over 170 species with 60-plus birds is a serious commitment to a living world, and the named invasive species tell you the research was granular. The tracking tiers hint at a collection layer that could be substantial or could be a log entry. Until Rockstar explains what Rare, Discoverable and Legendary actually unlock, treat the count as confirmed and the system around it as sketched.
