Every few years, the ghost of GTA 5 story DLC walks again. This week it walked because of a leak: files from a reportedly 190GB cache of 2022 Rockstar material, dumped publicly on September 17, appear to reference a Liberty City expansion, an Agent Trevor episode and a zombie-themed Michael chapter, as we reported in our leak dump story. None of it shipped. No Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead game has received a story expansion since 2010.

That history is not trivia. With GTA 6 nine weeks out, the question of whether Rockstar will ever make post-launch story content again is a live one. Here is what GTA 5's cancelled DLC reportedly was, why it died, and what that tells you about GTA 6.

What Rockstar Promised in 2013

The promise was explicit. In the months after GTA 5's September 2013 launch, Rockstar's Newswire told players to expect substantial story additions in 2014 continuing the adventures of Michael, Franklin and Trevor. That fit the company's record: GTA IV had received two full expansions, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, in 2009, and Red Dead Redemption had received Undead Nightmare in 2010.

2014 came and went. So did 2015 and 2016. In early 2017, Rockstar North's design director Imran Sarwar told Game Informer that the studio had wanted to make single-player additions, but GTA Online's demands had grown far beyond anything anticipated and the team's focus had moved to Red Dead Redemption 2. It was the closest thing to an obituary the story DLC ever got.

The Three Expansions That Reportedly Existed

What Rockstar never said is what the cancelled content was. Dataminers, a 2016 portfolio screenshot, a candid actor and now the September dump have filled that in. Everything below is reported, not confirmed by Rockstar.

Agent Trevor. The most consistently reported episode had Trevor Philips working with a government agency. Steven Ogg, who played Trevor, said in a 2023 interview that work on a DLC in which Trevor became some kind of agent had begun and then fizzled. The newly surfaced files reportedly include its mission names and assets, with a space station, mansions and jetpacks, which supports the long-held theory that pieces of it were folded into GTA Online's 2017 Doomsday Heist, where the orbital cannon and the Thruster jetpack finally appeared.

Michael and the zombies. A second episode has long been reported to involve a zombie outbreak, a natural fit for the studio behind Undead Nightmare. The leaked files reportedly add a twist: hints that players would have controlled Michael's teenage children, Jimmy and Tracey. Treat that as a reading of unfinished data, not a design document.

Liberty City. The biggest of the three was a map rather than an episode. A 2016 screenshot from a Rockstar employee's portfolio appeared to show GTA IV's Liberty City rebuilt in GTA 5's version of the RAGE engine, and the new dump reportedly contains audio assets and code pointing to the city being brought into GTA 5 or GTA Online. Kotaku calls it the best confirmation yet that the project was real. We examined the same idea from the GTA 6 side in Will GTA 6 Let You Visit Liberty City?

Why It All Died

The Sarwar explanation is the honest one, and it comes down to money and people. GTA Online became the most profitable thing Rockstar had ever made, every content team that might have built a Trevor episode was needed to feed it, and a one-off $20 expansion could not compete with Shark Cards on a spreadsheet. Then Red Dead Redemption 2 absorbed the rest of the company, and when it shipped in 2018 it received no story DLC either. The last story expansion for a GTA or Red Dead game, Undead Nightmare, is nearly sixteen years old.

What This Means for GTA 6

Three things follow, with different confidence on each.

Do not assume GTA 6 story DLC. This is the high-confidence one. Rockstar has announced no post-launch plan, as our DLC and post-launch guide explains, and its modern history says the online mode gets the content teams. The Twitch CEO's expectation that GTA 6 multiplayer arrives next year, reported in our Dan Clancy story, would put an even larger live-service engine in the position GTA Online held in 2014.

The conditions are different this time. Medium confidence. Rob Nelson has said Rockstar has more than doubled in size since RDR2, and GTA 6 ships as a single-player title with its online component arriving later, so the campaign team is not immediately competing with a live game. There is a story reason too: the chapter structure Rockstar confirmed in August, covered in our chapter structure explainer, is the kind of skeleton an episode could hang from.

Cut content will surface either way. Close to certain. GTA 5's cancelled episodes leaked out over a decade; GTA 6 already has one cut system reported, the grocery loop in our cut content report, and the game is not out yet.

The Ultimate Edition Is Not the Answer

Some readers will point at the $99.99 Ultimate Edition as evidence that Rockstar is already selling extra campaign content. It is not. As our pre-order bonuses guide lays out, the premium tier adds exclusive vehicles, apparel and personalised weapons: gear and cosmetics on top of the same story every buyer gets, with no mission, chapter or character in it. We would not read a story expansion into it. We would read a company that has learned, from the GTA 5 promise it could not keep, to say nothing about story content until it is built.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did GTA 5 ever get story DLC?

No. Rockstar said in late 2013 that substantial story additions were planned for 2014, but none was released. GTA 5's post-launch content went entirely to GTA Online.

What was the Agent Trevor DLC?

A reportedly planned single-player episode in which Trevor worked with a government agency. Trevor's actor Steven Ogg has said work on it began and fizzled, and files in the September 2026 leak dump reportedly include its mission names and assets. Rockstar has never acknowledged it.

Was Liberty City really coming to GTA 5?

Reportedly. A 2016 portfolio screenshot and now leaked audio and code suggest Rockstar worked on bringing GTA IV's city into GTA 5 or GTA Online. It was never announced or released.

Will GTA 6 have story DLC?

Unknown. Rockstar has announced no post-launch content. Its record since 2010 argues against it, though GTA 6's single-player launch and Rockstar's larger headcount leave more room than GTA 5 had.

The Bottom Line

GTA 5's story DLC is the most famous unkept promise in Rockstar's history, and the September leak dump has turned rumour into something closer to documentation: a Liberty City expansion, an Agent Trevor episode and a zombie chapter that all lost the fight with GTA Online. For GTA 6, the lesson is not that story DLC is impossible. It is that Rockstar will never again promise one before it is built, and that until it does, the campaign you buy on November 19 is the campaign you get.
